What made you decide to apply for an ACUHO-I Internship?
After working in Housing and Dining at the University of Iowa, I decided to continue my education in residence life by applying for an ACUHO-I Internship. I thought an ACUHO-I Internship would allow me to expand my skill set surrounding all things college housing, while helping students with a very personal aspect of their college or summer conference experience. As student affairs professionals, we want our students to grow and succeed, but in order for this to happen they must first be well – physically, emotionally, mentally, and academically. In my personal experience, how students behave and flourish in residence life functions as an indicator of this wellness. It is a privilege to engage with students in their living environments, to offer them resources, and to see them develop first-hand, and ACUHO-I strongly supports this endeavor.
Why are you excited to work at Roompact?
I am absolutely delighted to be working with Roompact this summer. After interviewing with Roompact last semester, it quickly became clear that Roompact was genuinely committed to student success and the institutions they serve. I am excited to join a team that demonstrates a willingness to challenge themselves and those around them for the better. As for my internship, Roompact offered unparalleled opportunities regarding the specific duties and expectations of their intern. I appreciate the flexibility with which Roompact has approached my incoming, as they continue to assign projects and tasks that cater to my own interests and learning needs.
What philosophy or values inform your work?
After completing my first year of grad school, I have student development theories floating around my head approximately 95% of the time. My favorite that informs most of the work I do, whether it relates to 1:1s with my RAs or student conduct, is Baxter Magolda’s Theory of Self-Authorship. The principles of Self-Authorship are pretty accessible – a large part of student development functions around students’ ability to take ownership of their own learning, beliefs, and identity. We often look to authority figures for inspiration and seek their approval as a measure of satisfaction and safety. As student affairs professionals, we must support and challenge our students to find that fulfillment within themselves, as catering to others’ perceptions is unsustainable long-term.
What do you do for fun? Any hobbies?
I very much enjoy being outside and trying new things, whether that’s hammocking with a good book or milking a cow for the first time (see picture). However, I do spend a fair amount of time inside making playlists for friends, cross-stitching, or spending time with family. I am a big proponent of self-care and am trying to be more intentional about taking time for myself.
