As we say goodbye to Ted Lasso, we thought it only appropriate we revisit some quotes from the show. There’s a reason why this show is so popular, particularly among student affairs and residence life folk, it speaks to our authentic hopes and wishes for our students and the values we try to uphold in our work. The following are six quotes from Ted Lasso that have resonance with the residence life professional in us.

Remember to embrace the everyday moments of life and of joy around you. We get to witness some of the most seminal moments in our students lives. Don’t let the crises overshadow that.

Residence life, at its core, is about community and relationships, and it’s the impact of these relationships that students often remember most long after they graduate from college. Residence life is about helping students find their way and writing their own stories. It’s about the journey, not always about the destination.

We get to witness the beautiful mosaic of people that make up this world. This quote sums up how residence life approaches its important role: making all students feel welcome. It also speaks to our desire for lifelong learning and love of helping others. In some ways, our residents teach us just as much as we teach them.

Logging keys. Submitting work orders. Not all of the work we do is “sexy,” but it’s all of the tasks we complete and the roles that we play that make residence halls a home. It’s the work of a lot of staff from facilities, to assignments, to custodial, to public safety, to the residence life staff living in the hall. Everyone has a role in making our communities thrive.

Residence Life is a team sport. And when we work on a staff team where everything “clicks” it can be magical. From supporting one another, to challenging one another and giving grace, the bonds we form can extend beyond the work. Don’t forget to tell members of your team how much you appreciate them.
